Decolonising North-South Collaborative Research

In order to continue strengthening North-South research collaboration, persistent challenges related to (de)colonisation for North-South research collaboration need to be identified. With this project, the GRP-Alliance collaborated with Ama Asantewah, Mariah Ngutu and Ravaka Andriamihaja to analyze the current state of North-South research collaboration from a decolonizing perspective, define characteristics of a decolonized North-South research collaboration and develop tools to support decolonization of North-South research collaborations.

The project "Decolonizing Research Partnerships" was funded by KFPE with a total ammount of CHF 20'450. The implementation of the project were also made possible thanks to the voluntary contributions of the authors' time.

The project resulted in the publication of a website on decolonizing global research collaborations:

In 2023 our annual conference focused on processes of decolonizing research partnerships. During the conference we discussed:

  • What does it mean to decolonize research collaborations?
  • What is needed to decolonize Swiss research collaborations?
  • What can we do to decolonize research, teaching and collaborations?

The conference consisted of two parts: a series of online workshops in the period of April 19- May 31 and the conference in Bern on May 5.

In the year 2022 Dr Ravaka Andriamihaja conducted several workshops and interviews on decolonizing research collaborations. As part of the KFPE annual conference, a first workshop took place on 10 June 2022 with 42 participants. At the Swiss Researching Africa Days at the end of October 2022, we led a panel on this topic.
